"A Look to the Heavens"

"The 16th century Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan and his crew had plenty of time to study the southern sky during the first circumnavigation of planet Earth. As a result, two fuzzy cloud-like objects easily visible to southern hemisphere skygazers are known as the Clouds of Magellan, now understood to be satellite galaxies of our much larger, spiral Milky Way galaxy. About 160,000 light-years distant in the constellation Dorado, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is seen here in a remarkably deep, colorful, image.

Spanning about 15,000 light-years or so, it is the most massive of the Milky Way's satellite galaxies and is the home of the closest supernova in modern times, SN 1987A. The prominent patch below center is 30 Doradus, also known as the magnificent Tarantula Nebula, is a giant star-forming region about 1,000 light-years across."

Chet Raymo, "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam"

"Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam"
by Chet Raymo

“On a Sunday afternoon years ago we tripped over the hill to the annual races on Beal Ban Strand, an afternoon of thundering excitement up and down the tide-washed sand, sleek and powerful horses ridden by young jockeys in gaily-colored silks. A good time was had by all, but I couldn't help but think of the events that occurred on those cliffs you see in the background of the photograph, just above the head of the jockey in white.

In the year 1580, six-hundred Catholics- Spaniards, Italians and Irish, including women and children- were besieged on a fortified promontory called Dun an Oir, the Fort of Gold, by Protestant troops of Queen Elizabeth I, under the command of Lord Grey of Wilton, assisted by Walter Raleigh. Recognizing that they had no chance of escape or relief, the Catholic forces agreed to surrender their arms, with a promise of mercy. They placed their weapons beyond the outer breastworks. Raleigh called the Irish out, and marched them away to where gallows had been erected to hang the lot. Then, he sent his swordsmen onto the crowded promontory. Blades flashed among the defenseless Spaniards and Italians. When it was over, five hundred severed heads were piled high in a field outside the fort, and in the English camp a hundred Irish men and women hung from beams in a long terrible row. These grisly spectacles would be left to rot when Grey and Raleigh departed, as a salutary lesson to the Papist rebels who would challenge the authority of the English Queen.

When word of the massacre at Dun an Oir reached London, Elizabeth wrote to Lord Grey, "I joy that you have been chosen the instrument of His glory."

There was, of course, more going on at Dun an Oir than religious antagonism, but religion was the armature on which hung the various political rivalries and alliances of late-16th-century Europe. Ireland has had a long and bloody history of religious strife. Only now, as an increasingly secular populace realizes that they have more in common to unite them than to divide them, do they turn their competitive instincts to such entertaining amusements as the headlong horse races on Beal Ban Strand.”

"Live Webcams Give Unique View Of Alaskan Bears Fishing For Salmon"

"Live Webcams Give Unique View Of Alaskan Bears Fishing For Salmon"
by Lee Rannals

"New webcams have been set up for the Internet public’s viewing, and this time they are capturing the iconic scene of bears snatching their lunch out of a river. set up live HD video streams of giant brown bears in Alaska catching salmon in Katmai National Park. Anyone with an Internet connection can now watch these bears catching their dinner by typing “” in their browser by clicking the links above.

The Brooks Falls cam is located on the banks of a five foot high waterfall, where as many as thirty bears have been spotted at a time catching salmon trying to make their way upstream to spawn. Another camera is located at the mouth of Brooks River and the entrance of Naknek Lake, where nearly 100 bears in the area utilize the lower river to feast on salmon and raise their young before hibernation. said that in the next few days, it will be unleashing additional cameras in the area, one of which will feature an area showing off a part of the river with safe water currents and levels where mothers and their cubs come to take advantage of the salmon-rich area. A Dumpling Mountain camera is also being set up to provide a bird’s eye view of the area, in addition to 10,000 Smokes, which is the site of the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century.

“A trip to Katmai National Park is a once in a lifetime event for most people and for nature and bear lovers and children everywhere, it is an impractical proposition,” Roy Wood, Chief of Interpretation at Katmai National Park, who spearheaded the initiative with, said in a press release. “By installing live cams we are giving people the chance to experience the bears, learn from their behaviors and develop the same strong emotional connection almost everyone who comes here has.”

The cameras are the latest edition to’s Pearls of the Planet initiative, which is a portfolio of video feeds installed throughout the world to show off animals in their natural habitats. This concept is driven by the idea of trying to educate people and deepen their connection to fall in love with nature again. “To me Alaska is one of the last great natural cathedrals on the planet–and the bears and salmon are the high priests in a scared place,” Charles Annenberg, founder of and VP of the Annenberg Foundation, said in a press release. “We hope people turn to this for inspiration and when they do, they will see lessons these creatures have for us- about cohabitation, instinct hand beauty.”

“Draw Alongside The Silence Of Stone”

“You have traveled too fast over false ground;
Now your soul has come to take you back.
Take refuge in your senses, open up
To all the small miracles you rushed through.
Become inclined to watch the way of rain
When it falls slow and free.
Imitate the habit of twilight,
Taking time to open the well of color
That fostered the brightness of day.
Draw alongside the silence of stone
Until its calmness can claim you.”

"From This Biased Point Of View..."

"We have looked first at man with his vanities and greed and his problems of a day or a year; and then only, and from this biased point of view, we have looked outward at the earth he has inhabited so briefly and at the universe in which our earth is so minute a part. Yet these are the great realities, and against them we see our human problems in a different perspective. Perhaps if we reversed the telescope and looked at man down these long vistas, we should find less time and inclination to plan for our own destruction."

"The Search for Truth"

"The Search for Truth"
By David Chandler

“Some people might wonder what motivates a physics teacher to get up and talk about religion and world issues. I am not a professional political scientist or sociologist or theologian. But I am a concerned citizen and a thinking person. To be a scientist does not mean you have to be a one-dimensional person out of touch with life beyond the lab. Physics used to be called natural philosophy. It is a branch of philosophy in that it is part of the quest for truth. The same thing that motivates me to ponder the true nature of the physical world leads me to explore other realms as well. On another level, I am concerned with political and religious issues because science is not conducted in an ivory tower. I have to come to grips with the fact that one of the largest employers of scientists and engineers is the defense industry. There are social consequences to what we do. I feel it is my responsibility as a physics teacher to help you become not only technically proficient, but also a thinking, caring person who will not automatically sell your talents to the highest bidder.

Enough introduction. What I want to talk about today is the search for truth. First, I encourage you to think. Most people don't think. They listen to people they think they can trust and then they believe what they are told. That's why propaganda works so efficiently. Socrates encouraged his followers to think, and he was accused of corrupting the youth. The reason is pretty clear. When you think for yourself you may come out with answers that deviate from the accepted truths of society around you. It means a lot of people are going to be upset with you.

When it comes to thinking, there is a word you need to understand, and that is "Orthodoxy." This world is full of orthodoxies, both in religion and in other fields. Orthodoxy literally means "right thinking." Orthodoxy places a high premium on holding to the truth, and in that sense it is good. But there is a paradox here. Orthodoxy can intimidate or punish those who actually have the highest commitment to truth: the critical thinkers who risk falling into heresy by pushing the search for truth into new regions or critically analyzing, and possibly rejecting, the accepted truths of the past. True orthodoxy, if it really values truth, must prefer heretical ideas over unexamined ideas. One must not be afraid of heresy and error or one would never leave home base. Orthodoxy represents the accumulated wisdom of generations, and thus it is foolish to dismiss it lightly. But truth is not static. Our knowledge is partial and uncertain. Truth does not come handed to us on a platter.

We show up on this planet and look around and wonder who the heck we are and what the world is all about. Coming to the truth involves a search. Everyone out there you turn to for answers is a searcher as well. This is not to discourage you. Take it from me, a fellow searcher: I believe there are glimpses of the truth to be had out there.

Another key word is conservatism. What do people mean when they talk about conservatism? I am really a pretty conservative guy. I am married to the woman I live with, I work for a living, I don't have purple hair or wear an earring in my ear. Many of my ideas are pretty conservative too. I grew up in a Republican, family that attended a very conservative Protestant church. I never went through a massive teenage rebellion where I threw out all that my parents believed and started from scratch. A lot of my ideas are different now, but I got from there to here along an evolutionary path of small, incremental changes in my thinking as I was exposed to new ideas and new experiences.

Conservatism is most often associated with political ideas. I find it ironic that political conservatives seem to be the most prone to wave flags and indulge in the symbolism and rhetoric of the American Revolution, while putting down revolutions wherever they crop up in the world. It seems to me that true conservatism in America should mean retaining the spirit that inspired the revolution, not empire building around the world. I don't see true conservatism in America today; I see greed.

The basic idea behind conservatism is that it is good to stay connected to your roots. One area that is very conservative in its very nature is science. Isaac Newton would never have arrived at his law of gravitation if he had not built upon what Kepler and Copernicus and Galileo had achieved before him. He said that if he saw farther than other men it was because he stood on the shoulders of giants. In other words his ideas were rooted in the accumulated knowledge of his day. Science that has no roots is pseudo science.

There is another word that also deals with the concept of roots, and that is radicalism. "Radical" literally means to go to the root. Science also offers examples of radical changes in thought. Copernicus shifted the center of the universe from the earth to the sun. That's a pretty radical shift in thinking. Instead of two separate realms, the earth down here and the heavens up there, the earth became a heavenly body and the heavenly bodies became other worlds. Interestingly enough, the more scholars study the process by which Copernicus came up with this radical idea, the more they are impressed with the conservatism that lay behind it. The real reason Copernicus rejected the planetary theories of his day was that with all the complications added to improve the accuracy of computations, the theory was getting too far from the roots established by Aristotle. By cutting through all the frills, searching for the real fundamentals of planetary science, in the manner of a true conservative, he adjusted one of the foundation ideas and came to be seen as a radical thinker. The ideas he proposed spawned what has become known as the Copernican Revolution.

True conservatism and true radicalism have a lot in common. Neither is the province of shallow thinking. To find ones roots, whether to preserve them or to criticize them, requires one to cut through all the underbrush of conventional ideas that hide them. Often, as in the case of Copernicus, the true conservative and the true radical are one in the same person.

There is one final word I want to call your attention to: Lies. People lie. People in power lie BIG. This sounds harsh, but it is real. People who lie believe they are justified in lying, otherwise lying would be very hard. They see lying as part of what they have to do to accomplish some worthy purpose. Most of us, with our limited ambitions, are comfortable only with small lies, but those who have the most sweeping and wonderful plans have learned to use the Big Lie. I am very concerned about the times we are living in because people are more willing to listen to lies than to learn the truth. The biggest lies today, are committed in the name of the noblest purpose: "national security". The problem is that lies destroy human community and the prospect of true democracy. Lies may protect us, but they destroy us at the core leaving nothing worth protecting.

John Stockwell, a high ranking CIA officer who dropped out and went public because of his conscience, says 1/3 of the people working under him were "propagandists." They spent time fabricating outright lies to feed into the U.S. press and the briefings of political figures who would be quoted in the press. Most of us look for biases in the news, but we generally don't expect outright lies. Look at the labels that are used to shape our thinking in the media. We may as well start at the top of the list with "Disinformation." Lies aren't disinformation, they are lies! Calling it disinformation is a pitiful attempt to avoid the truth; hence the term itself is a lie.

"Terrorism" is used by the administration and the media to apply to desperate violent acts of relatively powerless groups, often in response to a documented history of injustice. On the other hand, the reign of terror of a non-communist dictator, using disappearances and torture, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people is referred to simply as counterinsurgency.

"Humanitarian Aid" is a lie in broad daylight for all who are willing to see, when it refers to money given to a mercenary army of our own making, administered by the CIA with little or no accountability for how it is spent.

We use the concept of "outlaw states" for countries like Libya, that support "terrorists". The system of international law, established through a long history of treaties and applied even to individuals at Nuremberg, is what gives meaning to the concept of an "outlaw state". All this is set aside, however, when we sponsor mercenaries to mine roads and harbors, destroy crops, assassinate civilian leaders, recruit an army by kidnapping civilians, with the intent of overthrowing a legitimate government not of our liking. When Nicaragua took its case to the World Court, we declared ourselves above the law, knowing that the verdict would come out against us.

We tell ourselves that we are the last bastion of human rights in an evil world, yet we refuse to vote for resolutions in the United Nations condemning the use of torture and genocide for fear they might be applied against us and our allies.

The biggest lie of all is nuclear defense. Nuclear weapons cannot defend us, or anyone else. At 12 Hiroshimas per second it would take 12 hours to use up the world's supply of nuclear weapons. The destruction of all life on earth outweighs the ephemeral interests of any modern nation state. Sacrificing life on earth for any human purpose is the ultimate act of insanity. Is there hope for truth in a world where people are more concerned with orthodoxy than the search for truth, where laziness, greed and maintenance of power masquerade as conservatism, where radicalism is considered dangerous and subversive, where people in power lie boldly and the people of the world's largest democracy abdicate their power by remaining willfully ignorant?

Truth involves not only a search but also a struggle. What can I say? Is there hope? I hope so! I intend to maintain my hope and to act on it. I urge you to help bring our hope to fulfillment by not being seduced by laziness or lies, but by engaging in the struggle for truth.”

"Breaking: China Attacks India – Strong Implications for WW III"

"Breaking: China Attacks India – Strong Implications for WW III"
by The Common Sense Show

"Breaking news as China attacks India in an event that could culminate in World War III: “As Prime Minister Narendra Modi was preparing to meet Donald and Melania Trump at the White House, China on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Indian Army accusing it of stopping the construction of a road in what it called its “sovereign territory” in the Sikkim section of the India-China border.” This conflict did not remain just a war of words for long as the Russian media is collectively reporting that the Chinese crossed the border and destroyed two Indian bunkers in the Sikkim region of the Chinese-Indian border.

Yes it is absolutely true, China and crossed the Indian border and has attacked and destroyed two bunkers. This is very serious. Because of arch-rival India’s involvement, it would not take much to encourage Pakistan to become involved as well.
There is a major MSM blackout of this event. However, the Russian media is all over this story. With regard to this issue, Russia’s Sputnik News went on to say the following: “The construction of bunkers (Editor’s Note: Bunkers that were destroyed by the Chinese on Monday/Tuesday) and has been a flashpoint in Sino-India ties. These bunkers can be easily transported to the Himalayan terrain after getting built in the plains of Assam and Sikkim. The step is an indication of India’s keenness to raise a 90,000-strong Mountain Corps for strengthening the deployment along the 4,057-km of Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.”

From a military strategy perspective, it is clear that China is trying to lessen the potential side-effects of being caught in a two-front war. If China does make good on its announced intent to defend their preposterous claim of owning the South China Sea, there will eventually be war involving the United States and other TPP signatories such as Vietnam. Subsequently, it is clear that the Chinese are not going to allow any militarization or military build-up on the India-China border. However, there is a bigger picture issue at work here.

Do These Events Represent the Break-Up of the BRIC Nations? The Federal Reserve must be dancing in the streets. The BRIC nations have previously established the existence of the gold-based currencies which flies in opposition to the debt dominated approach of the Central Banks associated and largely controlled by the Rothschild banking empire out of Basel involving the Bank of International Settlements. Even for the BRIC nations that have not moved towards the establishment of a gold-backed set of currencies which are weighted against each other for purposes of trade, the intent of these nations to do so has always been present and threatens Western banking dominance. The best example of this intent was evident when the Iranians began to sell its oil, not based upon the Petrodollar scheme, but for gold to Russia, India and China.

For those that are not aware, the BRICS include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and other affiliate nations. At the core of the MSM fake news, this is one of the main motivations behind the media’s obsession with Russia and the false collusion charges because the BRICS threaten Western banking hegemony. As a result, the Western bankers desperately want war with Russia and any other BRIC nation that challenges the existing order of burdening nations and its citizens with a debt-based system of economics.

If India goes to war with China, and the trend curve is certainly there, then the BRICS lose a lot of its unity and power as two of its top three nations are facing off against each other. This makes war in the Middle East against Syria, Iran and Russia much more likely because their conflict between China and India will likely keep the majority of BRIC military forces out of the Middle East because of Chinese-India border concerns, and in China’s case, it obsession with dominating the South China Sea.

Adding to this line of thinking, the Indians pledged support to the United States and its efforts to keep the South China Sea open to free commerce. This represents a potential breakup of the BRICS which makes it much more likely that the world is one war closer to the full roll out of the New World Order.

One More Consideration: India and Pakistan are mortal enemies. This could potentially constitute a nightmare scenario for American forces in Afghanistan. If Pakistan and China engage India, all three nations have a substantial nuclear arsenal. The spin-off effects are daunting for both our troops in Afghanistan and in terms of the threat to world peace in general. This is Trump’s biggest military nightmare in this present moment.

Consider the following: India is attacked by both China and Pakistan. Taking advantage of the chaos, North Korea invades the South. The US, already having diverted a substantial investment into saving its largest based land force in Afghanistan, has developed holes in its defenses around the world because our undersized force is overextended. In this example, would China take advantage of the ensuing chaos to move on Taiwan? And with the majority of the United State military tied up in Asia, would Putin move to dominate the Middle East because the US, in this scenario, may not have the capacity to respond?Someone, either the BRICS (eg Russia) or the West (eg the United States) will have a military resource shortage and when the balance of power is altered, one way or the other, in the Middle Easter, the stronger party will make their move in Syria and beyond.

The upcoming events may mark the first time where Harry Truman’s notion of the Domino Theory may prove to be correct for the first time since its inception during the Korean War and was the primary justification to engage in the Vietnam War.

To those who think that the border issues between India and China are insignificant may wish to re-evaluate their position for when the United States runs out of troops to counter these threats, they will not have run out of nuclear missiles to continue the war.”

"How It Really Is"

Greg Hunter, James Howard Kunstler, “Major Crisis of Culture and Economy Coming Soon”

James Howard Kunstler,
“Major Crisis of Culture and Economy Coming Soon”
By Greg Hunter’s

"Author/journalist James Howard Kunstler has been in the writing business for decades and has never seen the geopolitical and economic landscape in America look like it does today. Kunstler explains, “I have never lived through a time, and it’s obvious I have lived a long time in American history that is as crazy as this one. The part that is the most disturbing is the people who used to be sane have now completely gone off the rails. I am speaking of the Democratic Party. The nonsense that is coming out of that wing of our politics has really become a reality optional political party.”

On the so-called Russia collusion story and the 2016 election, Kunstler says, “What is the strangest part of the whole story is that we have heard nothing but the phrase ‘collusion, Russian collusion, Russian interference’ in the election for the last 12 months. I have yet to hear anybody say what it actually was that they colluded with, or what they actually did other than getting the emails of the DNC and John Podesta and making them public. That doesn’t seem to be what they are talking about. We have to find out what they mean by collusion and interference because nobody wants to say.”

On the state of journalism, Kunstler, who is a prolific writer and has authored 20 books, contends, “It’s amazingly disappointing. What else can you say? It makes you wonder if the people at the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post are just underpaid and dumb or whether they are just so dogmatic and ideologically agenda driven that they have become reality optional. They are not interested in what’s really going on in the world, but only in the ‘narrative’ they are trying to push. It’s hard to understand how a culture can decay to this degree, but that’s what we are seeing. We are seeing the culture of journalism just rot away. What we are seeing is extremely politically driven media.”

Kunstler points out that all markets are rigged and is “worried” about the true state of the economy. Kunstler says, “Many have accepted the fact that the authorities can keep on producing these perversions and distortions of finance forever with no consequences. That’s the part that is really missing. That’s the part of that story that is missing is the idea that there are any consequences for intervening, perverting and distorting the price discovery mechanism of markets. That is the fundamental purpose of a market. The idea that that can go on indefinitely without producing consequences is absurd.”

So, how does Kunstler think this will play out? Kunstler says, “There is an appearance that they can carry on these shenanigans forever, but sooner, rather than later, we are going to see consequences. My guess is it will appear in the form of people losing their confidence in the value and the meaning of the money they are using. That would be a currency crisis. Right now, they have no reason to believe in the value of the things in the markets because the markets have been so distorted. Eventually, I think it will be a matter of them losing confidence in the currencies themselves. I think that’s where it’s going to start to accelerate into a major crisis of culture and economy.”

"Trump Plays Nuclear ‘Chicken’ With Putin Over Syria"

"Trump Plays Nuclear ‘Chicken’ With Putin Over Syria"
by Eric Zuesse

"U.S. President Donald Trump is playing a game of nuclear “chicken” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, regarding Putin’s threat on June 19th to go to war against the United States if the U.S. again shoots down, inside Syria - in the sovereign territory of the internationally-recognized-as-legal sovereign Syrian government - Syrian aircraft, or the aircraft of any of the foreign governments that have allied with Syria: Russia, Iran, and China.

After the U.S. had shot down a Syrian government plane on June 19th, which was bombing jihadists whom the U.S. government backs in order to overthrow the Syrian government, Russia announced“In areas where Russian aviation is conducting combat missions in the Syrian skies, any flying objects, including jets and unmanned aerial vehicles of the international coalition discovered west of the Euphrates River, will be followed by Russian air and ground defenses as air targets” - meaning ordered out, or else immediately shot down.

That would place the U.S. and Russia in a traditional war against each other, over Syrian territory (Russia to protect Syria’s government, U.S. to replace it by a Saudi-allied jihadist one). The loser in that war, over the battlefields in Syria, would then have only one way to prevent defeat, which is a blitz nuclear attack against the other’s homeland, World War III between Russia and U.S., which would be ‘won’ by whichever of the two sides suffered the less damage (irrespective of whether the entire planet and ultimately all life will then have actually been destroyed by the exchange). The first side to attack would knock out many of the other side’s retaliatory silo-based ICBMs and thus probably be the ‘winner’, though that’s not certain (since most nukes aren’t silo-based).

Russia’s announcement is basically saying that direct war between Russia and the U.S. will result if the U.S. persists in its effort to conquer Syria, but the Washington Post has said that it’s really only a ‘bluff’, and CNBC has said that it’s only ‘bluster’, and Trump is now splitting hairs over whether he goes with that view (the neoconservative view) to continue the war against Assad, or whether Trump instead will abandon the neoconservative effort and withdraw American forces from Syria once ISIS there is defeated.

Both President Emmanuel Macron of France, and Prime Minister Theresa May of UK, have already gone on record as supporting the neoconservative position, that the U.S. and its allies should dictate to the sovereign government of Syria, and that Syria’s government should obey. Macron himself has even warned that “the use of chemical weapons will be met with a response, and even if France acts alone.”

The summit meeting of the heads of state of the G20 countries will take place in Hamburg on 7 and 8 July 2017. Included there will be not only the U.S.-allied leaders - especially Macron, May, and Saudi Arabia’s King and Crown Prince - but also Putin, and also China’s Xi Jinping. There is some press-speculation that Trump wants to negotiate a deal there for Russia to abandon its alliance with Syria, and also its alliance with Iran. President Obama had tried to do that, but Putin declined the proposal. Perhaps the Western alliance is making these soundings of moving forward despite the Russian warning, so as to increase the pressure on Putin to cave, to crack him. In any event, the jihadists (agents of the Sauds) in Syria know that if they again set up a chemical attack so as to blame it on Assad, the U.S. and its allies have already committed themselves to go to war to overthrow Syria’s government (for ‘humanitarian reasons’). Any jihadist group there could thus pull the trigger even prior to the G20 Summit. Perhaps a jihadist will indeed pull the trigger, but would the U.S. then serve as the gun that some of Trump’s federal employees have promised the U.S. will be in such an instance?

In a game of chicken, each side threatens, and maybe also deceives, so that its opponent will believe the worst; but the individual who pulls the trigger might turn out to be an obscure person about whom the general public knows nothing. It happened in WW I, and there is no reason why it couldn’t happen again. Furthermore (as that linked-to source also well documents), underestimating the seriousness of a head-of-state’s commitments, can produce global catastrophe.”

"URGENT: Unusual Flights of US Spying Planes over Syrian Coasts"

Michael Rivero comments: "IF, in fact, these reports are true, the timing, and the increase, of these recon flights concerns me greatly, after the debacle of Trump and his minions accusing the Syrian government of wanting to do more chemical attacks against their own people. I have to wonder if Trump, Mattis, and Tillerson are actually contemplating a decap strike against Damascus, coupled with an attempted regime change, and soon; such an act would be fraught with horrific risks, because Putin has declared that any such a move would mean that Russia would be at war with the United States."

"A Look to the Heavens"

“Following an ancient galaxy-galaxy collision 200 million light-years from Earth, debris from a gas-rich galaxy, NGC 5291, was flung far into intergalactic space. NGC 5291 and the likely interloper, also known as the "Seashell" galaxy, are captured near the center of this spectacular scene. The sharp, ground-based telescopic image looks toward the galaxy cluster Abell 3574 in the southern constellation Centaurus.

Stretched along the 100,000 light-year long tidal tails, are clumps resembling dwarf galaxies, but lacking old stars, apparently dominated by young stars and active star forming regions. Found to be unusually rich in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, the dwarf galaxies were likely born in intergalactic space, recycling the enriched debris from NGC 5291 itself.”

“The Silence”
by Chet Raymo

“The hiding places of my power
Seem open; I approach, and then they close;
I see by glimpses now; when age comes on,
May scarcely see at all, and I would give,
While yet we may, as far as words can give,
A substance and a life to what I feel...”

"These few lines from Wordsworth's "The Prelude" leapt off the page at me this morning. They capture well enough what my life has become. All those years of teaching, of writing in the Boston Globe, were years of sharing public knowledge, knowledge that had been vetted by the scientific community. The work was not about me. The teacher was me, the writer was me, but what I taught and wrote was reliable, consensus knowledge of the world. A student in my classes or a reader of my newspaper columns would have been hard pressed to know my politics or my religion or the nature of the questions that came in the darkest hours of the night. And that is the way it should have been; that was my homage to objectivity.

Those were valuable years, years of building up a sturdy polder in the sea of mystery, a place to stand with a firmness of foot. And now, in retirement, with time on my hands- and on my mind- I find myself more inclined to explore what Wordsworth called "the hiding places of my power." I approach. They close. I touch with my hand the surface of the pond that Pat wrote about the other day; my hand comes out of the depths to meet me. I see by glimpses. It is, I suppose, a kind of forgetting. With the forgetting comes a certain freshness. My fingertip touches the surface of the world from above and from below, and concentric circles spread outwards, rippling, like a soundless sound, and I struggle, in words, as best I can, to give a substance and a life to what I feel.

This does not mean, I trust, that I am going soft, finding supernaturalist religion or getting all New Age squishy as "age comes on." I keep my feet planted on solid fact and read my weekly "Science" and "Nature" along with my Wordsworth. No, it is rather a simple freedom to explore the hiding places, attending to private particulars as opposed to public universals, listening for the small voice that whispers from the nooks and crannies of yet unassimilated reality.

There is a passage in "The Prelude" where a young Boy (the poet?), standing in evening air by the glimmering lake, makes a mimic hooting with his hands to his mouth and the owls answer. Twooo-twooo. And the reply. Twooo-twooo. Then, unaccountably, the answers cease. And in the silence the boy becomes more keenly aware than ever of water, rocks, and woods, and mountain torrents, "that uncertain heaven, received into the bosom of the steady lake." Thoreau has something similar. He rejoiced in owls; their hoot, he said, was a sound well suited to swamps and twilight woods. The interval between the hoots was a deepened silence, suggesting, to Thoreau, "a vast and undeveloped nature which men have not recognized." It is that that I now attend: the deepened silence between the hoots.”

The Poet: Wendell Berry, "The Circles Of Our Lives"

"The Circles Of Our Lives"

"Within the circles of our lives
we dance the circles of the years,
the circles of the seasons
within the circles of the years,
the cycles of the moon,
within the circles of the seasons,
the circles of our reasons
within the cycles of the moon.

Again, again we come and go,
changed, changing. Hands
join, unjoin in love and fear,
grief and joy. The circles turn,
each giving into each, into all.

Only music keeps us here,
each by all the others held.
In the hold of hands and eyes
we turn in pairs, that joining
joining each to all again.
And then we turn aside, alone,
out of the sunlight gone
into the darker circles of return,
Within the circles of our lives..."

"How It Really Is"

"US May Be Preparing for 'Preemptive Strike' on Syria Amid Chemical Weapons Claim"

"US May Be Preparing for 'Preemptive Strike' on
 Syria Amid Chemical Weapons Claim"
by Sputnik

"The United States might be preparing for a "preemptive" attack on Syrian government troops as the White House warned of a possible chemical attack allegedly planned by Damascus, senior Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev said Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the White House claimed that Washington had identified "potential preparations" for a chemical attack by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces. The Kremlin commented on the claims and said that it considers US' threats against Syrian legitimate leadership to be "unacceptable." Damascus also denied the information.

Michael Rivero comments: "I think the Russian analysis, presented here at, is completely reasonable. We are most likely looking at an horrific false flag operation, courtesy of the US military and various Us alphabet soup agencies in Syria, to be blamed on the Syrian government, as the justification for a full-scale invasion of Syria, in order to attempt regime change in Damascus. But the questions I would have to ask about such a scenario are:

1. Why would al-Assad do this when his troops are winning against ISIS on the ground?
2. Weren't Syria's chemical weapons completely destroyed under a Russian brokered, and UN-supervised program several years ago?

Of course, such an invasion most probably means war with Russia, but what does the American Deep State care about the good of 'We the People?' The short answer is, absolutely nothing. They have their elaborate bunkers, and top of the line survival gear in hand; the rest of us can just die of radiation sickness, and they won't give a damn.

This is officially insane, and the fact that the US government collectively thinks, for one millisecond, that the American people would believe this codswallop, demonstrates that they have learned utterly nothing from having lied this country into the the military misadventures which are still with us, Afghanistan and Iraq."
"This is officially insane," Rivero writes. To relentlessly risk nuclear war IS an insane act, to any rational human being. But what if they're not "rational human beings" at all, instead an intra-species predator genetically proven different from the 94% of the rest of us? What then? It would explain a great deal...

"When you've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains,
however improbable, must be the truth."
- "Sherlock Holmes", by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

"Imagine - if you can - not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern for the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken. And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools. Those who have no conscience at all are a group unto themselves, whether they be homicidal tyrants or merely ruthless social snipers.

Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless. You are not held back from any of your desires by guilt or shame, and you are never confronted by others for your cold-bloodedness. The ice water in your veins is so bizarre, so completely outside of their personal experience, that they seldom even guess at your condition. In other words, you are completely free of internal restraints, and your unhampered liberty to do just as you please, with no pangs of conscience, is conveniently invisible to the world."

"Fish Are the Last to Notice the Water"

"Fish Are the Last to Notice the Water"
by Paul Rosenberg

"I ran into this phrase in a physics lecture, of all places, and knew it would be the title of my next article. And this is generally a true statement. Those who are immersed in something… who have always been immersed in it… are the last to see what it really is.

By now it should be obvious to the people of the West that they’re being held in a primitive bondage. And fortunately, more eyes are opening to this than ever before. But still, most people are so used to this particular “water” and have so long acclimated themselves to it, that they haven’t recognized it. There’s nothing inherently wrong with most of these people; they just haven’t stepped back far enough to see the obvious. So, let’s do that.

The Long View: A single model of human life has dominated the West for thousands of years. I can summarize by saying that this rulership model began to form in about 5400 BC, dominated Mesopotamia by about 4000 BC, took hold in Egypt by 3000 BC, and spread over the rest of the world from there. So, it has dominated for some 5,000 or 6,000 years, depending on which dates you prefer.

This model is so common that it’s hard to make out at first. Here are its parts:

A small minority of men hold a monopoly on making rules everyone else will live by.
This minority enforces these rules on everyone else.
The minority extracts regular payments from everyone else. This is said to be necessary for protection and justice.
The minority fails to provide justice on a daily basis and very often sends the children of the majority to fight in battles to the death.
A minority-aligned intellectual class assures the majority that this is the best that can be had and that it has been sanctified by some higher power (gods, ancestors, tradition, reason, experience, progress, or whatever).
No one is permitted to escape this model. Those who try are punished as traitors and heretics.

This is the primary model of human organization and has been for some 5,000 years. And aside from arguing over details (or fury over the audacity to say it), there is no real challenge to this statement. Moreover, this model has been an abject failure – a demonstrable failure:

Wars have continued throughout its entire reign.
Justice has never been achieved and generally came closest in places away from power centers.
Human happiness has not noticeably increased.
Even when science has broken out, it has been recaptured and forced to serve the model. (The internet, for example.)

On top of that, this model has to be maintained by force. As noted above, straying from it is harshly punished. If this system was truly superior, force wouldn’t be required. After all, we don’t have to force people to buy houses or cars. So, by any number of measurable standards, this model fails, and very, very badly. The best defense one might make for it is that something else could be worse. But since we’re not permitted to test that assertion, the word bondage is perfectly fitting.

At a bare minimum, we can say this: Any system with no major upgrade in 5,000 years must be considered hopelessly obsolete, moribund, and degenerate. This is where we stand today. And it is crucial that we help our fellows see it.

How Do We Do Make Them See? First off, we cannot make people see. And truthfully, they generally see it quite well on their own. What they lack is inner strength to acknowledge what they see. It is not intellectual strength that most people lack; it is emotional strength. And so, you’ll have to be slow and gentle if you want success. Rigorous intellectual arguments are not enough, and in many cases they’re counterproductive.

In the end, the way to help your friends and neighbors is downright biblical: Plant seeds, wait for them to germinate, water them. Show kindness, love them, shine light on their path. It doesn’t matter if this sounds hokey to you or if you’d rather engage in brilliant arguments. This is what works. So, decide what you really want: for your friends and neighbors to see, or for you to “win.” The fish need faith to imagine a dry shore, and they’re not going to get it from intellectual badgering.”
